In 1978 he married Caroline Reyne (née Bond).^[48]

He is a keen student of military history and a qualified offshore yachtsman (he is Admiral of the British Kiel Yacht Club).^[49]

Lady Richards is a trustee of charities Plant for Peace and The Afghan Appeal.^[50]

In 2014, Richards was created a Life Peer taking the title Baron Richards of Herstmonceux. He sits in the House of Lords as a crossbencher.
